  • Va. Republican Yancy Pulled Out Of A Hat?

Actually, it was a stoneware bowl:

"RICHMOND — A Virginia elections official reached into an artsy stoneware bowl, pulled out a name and declared Republican David Yancey the winner of a House of Delegates race that could determine which political party controls the chamber."

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/local...=.729d59a219c8

I sense a fix. Was there really another name in that bowl?

But, seriously, is this any way to resolve a tied election with the fate of the state hanging in the balance? I suppose they could have just flipped a coin? One with heads on both sides?

The fix was in before the 'stoneware bowl' was even considered. When the Republican elections officials decided the vote just happened to switch to a Republican causing a tie is where it happened most blatantly.

    Donald Trump tweets he deleted:
    • The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy.
    • He [Obama] lost the popular vote by a lot and won the election. We should have a revolution in this country!
    • More votes equals a loss...revolution!

What alternative is there to a tie breaker when an election is tied?

The prime issue is why was one ballot changed to Republican by the Republican judges appointed by the Republicans in the Legislature? If that hadn't happened then there would not have been a tie in the first place.

No voter should be disenfranchised from having his vote count. Including that voter who corrected his ballot.

I see. No ballot shouldn't be changed to Republican by the Republican election judges appointed by the Republican legislature. Got it.

But you have no problem with denying thousands of legal voters the chance to vote due to Republican voter restrictions.

You mean only Democrat judges should rule on these cases?

Might have been more honest, but I find it suspicious that Republican judges appointed by a Republican legislature decided suddenly that a ballot suddenly became clearly Republican causing a tie. You apparently don't find that odd at all.

Democrat judges appointed by a Democratic controlled legislature are no more honest than Republican judges. And that voters ballot needed to be counted in order not to disenfranchise a legal vote by a registered voter. I can't imagine anyone would support disenfranchising and not counting a voter's vote.

We are talking about what happened here and now. "What-aboutism" is just a diversion with the "Democrat ... no more honest" crap. The ballot in question was a spoiled ballot with multiple mistakes on it including double voting on this seat and using an "X" on the more important seat. But if you have to have Republican election judges appointed by Republican Legislature decide a spoiled ballot is OK so the Republican doesn't lose and call that fair...

Link to the ballot itself and the NYTimes article on it.

Again, it wouldn't be any more fair if the judges were Democrats appointed by a Democratic legislature. And the judges needed to make a judgement call. That's why they're called judges. And a voter's vote needed to be counted. Virginia's election regulations address this exact kind of scenario. And the judges ruled exactly in accordance with the regulations that were in effect long before the election.

"If" and other "What-aboutisms" can be safely disregarded. As can be seen from the actual ballot shown in the link I provided it was a spoiled ballot. The Republican judges appointed by the Republican legislature decided to accept the Republican spoiled ballot needed to create a tie. Those are the facts. Can you point to the specific regulation that says spoiled ballots need to be counted when Republicans might lose?

Do research. Virginia's election regulations cover the scenario that occurred. And it was decided in accordance with said written regulations.

I did the research. Can you show me the Virginia regulation that says spoiled ballots, as long as they can be interpreted as Republican, have to be counted? I didn't think so.
