  • Should tithing be tax deductible?

    Happy April 16.

As I'm sure most of you know, tithing can be a tax deduction.

The Mormon Church gives its members a form at the beginning of each year stating the amount of tithing that member gave the Church in the preceding year. The amount of the tithing is supposed to be 10% of a person's net earnings for the year and I think most members never stop to realize that this means the Church knows how much money each family earns in a given year and that this information can be used for all kinds of Church fundraisers, political or not. I learned a long time ago that if you're a Mormon and you are buying your home and you pay your tithe you should always file a long form.

That all being said, is making tithing a tax deduction a violation of Church and State?
